- What are the legal requirements for boiler installation?
All boiler installations in the UK must be performed by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Engineers must notify Gas Safe of all installations performed so that customers can receive a Boiler Installation Certificate attesting that the boiler was competently installed by a Gas Safe Registered individual.
With our Installer Connect App, you can easily notify Gas Safe, register a boiler warranty and build up your points in one place to make the process simple.

- Will a boiler increase the value of a new build?
Energy efficiency increases property value according to UK bank Nationwide, with a 1.7% increase in value for properties in bands A and B compared to band D. Choosing an energy-efficient boiler is a significant way to improve the efficiency rating of your new build.
- What boiler is best for a new build?
When selecting a boiler for your new build property, consider the size of the building, the water pressure, the number of taps and the number of occupants.
For smaller buildings, a combi boiler is excellent for saving space and can provide both heating and hot water on demand. However, its compact size means it can only supply one tap with hot water at a time.
For a new build property that will have a higher number of occupants or multiple bathrooms, we recommend a system boiler, which can store hot water in a large cylinder, allowing it to supply hot water to multiple areas of the home at once. System boilers are also a strong option for new builds in areas with lower water pressure.
- Is social housing eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
While social housing isn’t eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, those on housing benefits are eligible for the Warm Homes Social Housing Fund for energy-efficient heating. Social housing properties with low energy rating (D-G) can also be fitted with heat pumps via the Energy Company Obligation.
- Which heating solutions are best for social housing?
Heating for social housing should be energy-efficient and cost-effective. Heat pumps, which offer energy efficiency of around 400%, are an excellent option for this.
If opting for a boiler, consider the size of the property and the number of intended occupants. A combi boiler is excellent for small properties as it’s compact in a single unit to save space. However, for larger properties with a high number of occupants, a system boiler is a strong choice as it can store large amounts of hot water in a separate cylinder.
If you are using an older property that was built with a heat-only boiler in mind, a new heat-only boiler installation may be the most cost-effective choice.

- How to choose a boiler for your home
At Ideal Heating, we have three main boiler types available, each best suited to a different property type.
Combi boilers are popular choices for many homeowners due to their ability to provide both heating and hot water on demand. They are best suited to small properties as they’re compact without additional tanks or cylinders. They’re less suited to large properties with a number of occupants, as they struggle to deliver hot water to more than one tap or showerhead at a time. They’re also best suited to homes with high water pressure.
A system boiler is recommended for larger homes with a high water demand, as they are able to store a large hot water supply in their boiler cylinder.
For older homes, a heat-only boiler may be suitable. However, this is only recommended for homes already fitted with this boiler type.
Our blog comparing these three boiler types can aid in your decision.

- Combi boiler versus conventional boiler: What’s the difference?
The difference between a combi boiler and a conventional boiler (also known as a ‘heat only boiler’) is combi boilers are one, single boiler that provides central heating and hot water, whereas a conventional boiler requires a cold water storage tank and a hot water cylinder to do so.
Head to our blog to explore the difference between combi, heat only & system boilers in more detail.
- How does a heat only boiler work?
A heat only boiler works by feeding cold water from the storage tank to the hot water cylinder. Here, the boiler heats the water which is then circulated to your taps and showers to provide hot water, or to radiators to provide heating. - What is a heat only boiler?
A heat only boiler is also known as a regular boiler or conventional boiler. They are common in older UK homes, particularly those that were constructed before the 1970s. If your loft space holds a small expansion tank and larger cold water storage cylinder, you’ve probably got a regular heat only boiler.

- Should I choose a system boiler or combi boiler?
System boiler VS combi boiler is something we’re often asked about, and it really depends on your heating and hot water needs, as well as the type of property you call ‘home’.
Gas system boilers heat water in a hot water system which is then pumped to radiators and the hot water cylinder to heat water and provide warmth.
On the other hand, combi boilers take water directly from the mains. Only as and when you need it does the boiler heat the water, burning gas to do so.

- What size system boiler do I need?

- How do system boilers work?
Gas-powered system boilers work by a flame heating up water in a hot water system that’s enclosed. The hot water gets pumped around the hot water cylinder, where it warms up the water inside. It’s also pumped around the radiators to provide heat.
